What Is Percentile?

A percentile indicates the value below which a given percentage of observations fall. The 90th percentile means 90% of values are below that point.

Formula

Percentile Rank = (Number of values below x / Total values) × 100

Example

If 75 is the target and the dataset is {45, 55, 65, 75, 85}, then 3 out of 5 values are below 75, giving a 60th percentile rank.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between percentile and percentage?
